Smoking is addictive and can affect human body severely in more than one way. It can cause adverse reactions in our internal organs and result in respiratory diseases, lung cancer, weak heart and panting. In addition, chain smokers have a bad odor around them with tainted breath and stained teeth.

Some of the main consequences of smoking include:

• Increased risk to stroke, heart diseases, aneurysm and coronary diseases.

• Abnormal functioning of lungs, decreased rate in lung growth and high risk of lung cancer.

• Problems related to the respiratory system and respiratory tract.

• Suffering from chronic bronchitis, pneumonia and emphysema.

• Low fitness levels.

• Increased heart rate.

• Rise in blood pressure.

• Decreased blood flow to toes and fingers.

• Sudden stimulation of nervous system and brain.

• Dizziness without smoking.

• Watery eyes.

• Appetite loss.

• Nausea.

• Hyperacidity.

• Less sensitivity to smell and taste.

• Continuous coughing.

• Yellowish or brownish stained teeth due to nicotine accumulation.

• Bleeding of gums especially during early morning.

• Development of gum diseases, loose teeth, plaque and gingivitis.

• Yellowish colored fingers.

• Highly prone to cold and cough.

• Slow recovery from illnesses.

• Infertility of women or pregnancy complications (difficulty in conceiving and abnormal growth of child).

• Impotence for men.

• Early signs of aging.

• Increased risk to different cancers – pancreas, mouth, throat, cervix, bladder, stomach and kidney.

• Nervousness, agitation, restlessness and tension.

• Headaches and insomnia.

• Irregular sleeping patterns.

• Loss of concentration.

• Intense cravings.

• Ulcers in the stomach.

• Peripheral vascular disease (caused by decrease in the flow of blood to the legs).

• Graying, thinning, dull staining of hair that makes it look lifeless.

• Slow hair growth and increase in hair loss.

• Cerebral thrombosis – a kind of stroke which results due to blocking of carotid artery which may cut off the blood supply to the brain cells.

• Thickening of blood.

• Blood clotting in the brain.

• Eye diseases including macular degeneration due to aging, cataract, glaucoma and Graves’ ophthalmopathy.

• Permanent blindness in case of severe damage.

• Sore throat and damage to oral cavity, larynx and esophagus.

• Risk of amputation of hands and legs due to development of gangrene.

• Cold fingers due to poor circulation of blood.

• Asthma, tuberculosis, shortness of breath, cough with sputum and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

• Abnormal blood cholesterol levels.

• Gallstone formation, burning of chest, development of peptic ulcers.

• Crohn’s disease.

• Formation of wrinkles and scarring on the skin.

• Development of leg pain and Buerger’s disease.

In the case of pregnant women, smoking results in abnormal growth of the child in the womb. This can result in still birth or premature birth. The new-born tends to have low birth weight.

Passive smokers who inhale the smoke that is exhaled by the actual smokers also have high risk to development of heart problems and lung cancer.
